A Brief History of Bean Pole Farm
Bean Pole Farm is a small, woman-owned, diversified market farm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Founded in the spring of 2015, Bean Pole Farm has been producing vegetables and flowers through a land-lease incubator program at the Upper Peninsula Research and Experiment Center in Chatham (see more about this program here). In the fall of 2017, Landen and her family purchased a permanent piece of soil in Skandia. Bean Pole Farm is now nestled perfectly halfway between the farm's two major produce outlets; located just 20 miles south of Marquette and about 25 miles west of Munising. The new land, and new home to Landen and her family, will be intentionally shaped into garden beds and sown to a cover crop in 2018 and carefully observed, to better understand the soil type and conditions. This is all to put the best interests of the soil first, to ensure the productivity and longevity of Bean Pole Farm in years to come. In the meantime, Bean Pole Farm will continue to hold its land-lease in Chatham for vegetable production during the transition.
